After our previous discussion on the Five Hindrances we decided that we’d like to continue studying this topic by focusing on a single hindrance and paying attention to how it plays in our lives and so we decided to study the first one in most versions of the list: greed and sensual desire. Try to notice when greed and desire are present and notice how you are choosing to respond to its presence. Notice how it feels in your body. Play with different responses.

Also, please do your own research so that we can share the wide variety of insights that the sangha brings

This is the article about the five hindrances that was included in the previous post on this topic.

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS – location in the sidebar.

Domenic will facilitate a discussion on the Five Hindrances. Here is an edited version of the email he sent to the group to kick off the week:

This is an article about the five hindrances.  If you don’t want to read the whole thing (sloth and torpor?!) at least memorize what the five hindrances are so you can become aware of them as they pop up during the week.

During the week, try to become aware of when a hindrance is particularly prevalent for you.  Don’t shy away from it, and don’t try to fix it…just become aware of it and label it, label it, label it.  The hindrances are excellent to practice with because we regularly activate them (that’s why they are hindrances), and there is a deep bodily reaction associated with them.

For anyone interested in deepening the ability to cognate the emotive reaction/felt sense, this is a dharma talk ( given by a monk during a monastic retreat) outlining the unification of the cognitive and the affective.

Please feel free to do your own research.  The best thing about group study is the variety of insights that members bring to the topic.

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS – location in the sidebar.
