Tuesday, May 5th

Next Tuesday we will be discussing the next three steps on the Eightfold Path that comprise the ethical conduct section of the path: wise speech, wise action and wise livelihood. This part of the path calls us to take care in our speech, our actions, and our daily lives to do no harm to others and to cultivate wholesomeness in ourselves. This part of the path ties into the precepts.

There are a wealth of resources on the web about this subject so please share anything that you enjoy with the group.

In two weeks time we’d like to have a discussion about how the group is going as we’ve been sitting together for over a year now. So, if you have any cravings or aversion about the things we do as a sangha then that will be the time to air them out. If everyone is happy with the way things are then we can hang-out in equanimity together. And sit…

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS – location in the sidebar.

Tuesday, April 28th

Next Tuesday we will be discussing ego, attachment and the self. As this is central to the Buddha’s teachings there are a wealth of resources on the web about this subject so please share anything that you enjoy with the group.

As we were settling on this subject for study this week, I was reminded of a teaching from my Zen period, from Dogen’s Genjokoan:

To study the way is to study the self.
To study the self is to forget the self.
To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things.
To be enlightened by all things is to be free from attachment to the body and mind of one’s self and of others.

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS – location in the sidebar.

Tuesday, April 7th

For April’s first Tuesday we will take our back to the basics series to the fourth and final Noble Truth. Please do your own research into this Noble Truth and bring that to the discussion. To launch the expedition, here are a couple of resources:

This is a link to the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta: Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion as translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu on Access to Insight – there are links to other translations on this page.

And this is a link to a paper by Stephen Batchelor that discusses the 4 Noble Truths as a program for action rather than as ideas to be understood.

6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting
