Tuesday, July 7th

Next week, for our back to the basics Tuesday, we will begin a series of discussions on the precepts. Every week I end these posts with ‘There are a wealth of other resources on the web about this subject…’ but really, this time…

Anyway, here are some resources to start your explorations:

  • here is an article by Thanissaro Bhikku
  • here are the precepts presented by San Francisco Zen Center. I’ve included this as it shows how the precepts can be worded both as prohibitions and encouragements
  • and finally, there are many, many talks on the precepts on Dharma Seed and AudioDharma.

Please share anything that you enjoy with the group.

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS – location in the sidebar.

Tuesday, June 30th

Next Tuesday we will talk about taking refuge, in Buddha, in Dharma and in Sangha.

Here are a some resources for your exploration of this subject:

  • here is a page that has links to 3 talks (one for each refuge) by Gil Fronsdal and here is an article by Gil
  • here and here are a couple of articles by Tara Brach
  • and finally, here is an article on taking refuge by Ajahn Sumedho.

There are a wealth of other resources on the web about this subject so please share anything that you enjoy with the group.

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS – location in the sidebar.

Tuesday, June 16th

Yet another third Tuesday has come around and we will be sitting, walking and sitting – the evening will be silent. No discussion is planned, so no reading…

However, there is reading planned for a following Tuesday (and other Tuesdays beyond that). When we met a few weeks ago to discuss how the group was going, several people said that they would like to work through a book together. After some discussion we decided on Tara Brach’s book Radical Acceptance. We didn’t set a schedule or make any more detailed plans so stay tuned…

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:00 walking
7:00 – 7:30 sitting

We meet at BIBS – location in the sidebar.

Tuesday, June 9th

Compassion must pierce the heart, in such a way that the heart is translated into action.

This is a quote from A Call to Compassionate Action – a daylong teaching given by The 17th Karmapa in Seattle recently.

Robert Sperry was at this event and will give us a short report on the teaching and then we can have a discussion on the hows, whens and ifs of how we act with compassion (and, of course, the nots and don’ts).

This is a link to the Karmapa’s website. There are some webcasts on the site but not from the Seattle event.

The schedule is:

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS – location in the sidebar.
