Tuesday, May 24th

At the end of our discussion last week someone mentioned that they had the line

form is emptiness, emptiness is form

going around their head.

This is a line from the Heart Sutra which is chanted frequently in buddhist monasteries. So, we are going to take a look at this sutra for the next couple of weeks – maybe chant it several times a day – and then talk about it on our 5-in-a-month Bonus Tuesday.

We’ll be looking at a couple of versions of the sutra that are available online; one from San Francisco Zen Center, and the other from Red Pine who says this about the sutra:

The Heart Sutra is Buddhism in a nutshell. It covers more of the Buddha’s teachings in a shorter span than any other scripture, and it does so without being superficial or commonplace.

Well, if that doesn’t get the juices flowing…

6:00 – 6:30 sitting
6:30 – 7:15 discussion
7:15 – 7:30 sitting

The sitting takes place at BIBS.

Tuesday, May 3rd

For the first (back2basics) Tuesday of next month we will be finishing our journey through the online Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation course offered by IMC. This online course is supplemented with written material, exercises, and reflections for bringing the practice into daily life. The course is not live, so it can be done any time during the day.

This week we will be moving on to Week 6: Daily Life.

To have doubt about mindfulness, of the value and importance of just being mindful, borders on having doubt about the value of being present for life in general, because mindfulness and being present for life is the same thing.

The schedule is:

In any given moment, there are two things happening. There is what’s happening, and our relationship to what’s happening.” Gil Fronsdal

Friday, Saturday and the 3rd Tuesday in December

To celebrate Bodhi Day/Rohatsu we will be expanding our Saturday half-day sitting into Friday night, so come and celebrate Buddha’s enlightenment with us in silence, from 7pm to 9pm, and then come back for more of the dance between sitting and walking on Saturday morning, 9am to 12:30pm.

And then… Yet more, sitting and walking as we welcome the 3rd Tuesday of the month to Boise.

For all of these sitting and walking parties, we will start with the usual 30 minute periods and adapt as prompted by the weather.

Looking out even further, for the next back2basics Tuesday at the start of 2016 (January 5th) we will be continuing our run through the online Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation course offered by IMC. In the second week of this course, we will be expanding our exploration of mindfulness of our physical bodies from the breath to the whole body so perhaps we can keep that in mind for the rest of this month.

We meet at BIBS – location in the sidebar.
